| Adineta sp. 6 hexahamata; foot with spurs. Many drawings of earlier descriptions of Adineta morphotypes are not very precise about connection of the spurs and the corresponding foot segment. Some drawings give the impression that the more or less cone-like spurs are attached directly to the spur-bearing foot pseudosegment in a certain angle. This morphotype is different. Here the spurs emerge from a lobe that is attached to the spur bearing foot pseudosegment in a flexible way like a cover of a book that can be opened or closed. Two stages of the spurs in different angle to the longitudinal axis of the foot are depicted here in these images (stills from a high-speed-video visble on Youtube). This "behavior" of the spurs could also be observed in the species from Morocco (1). This observation also suggests that probably many of the earlier drawings of the foot of Adineta are probably obsolete and are not suited for species identification. (1). |
